SKILLBUILD competitions are open to young people working and training within the construction industry. Entries are sought through colleges of further education, independent training organisations and direct employers throughout the UK.
Skillbuild, is organised and promoted by Construction Skills, the Sector Skills Council for Construction and as constructions biggest UK skills competition, searches for the best young builders across a variety of construction trades to compete to be the best in their field:
- Bricklaying
- Cabinet making
- Carpentry
- Joinery
- Painting and decorating
- Plastering
- Stonemasonry
- Wall and floor tiling
- Roof slating and tiling
- Roof sheeting and cladding
- Built up felt roofs
- Single ply roofing
Stage one:
Skillbuild 2009 heats take place across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Competitors have to complete a specific project designed to test both practical skills and related knowledge. Competitors compete against the clock and each other.
Stage two:
Skillbuild 2009 UK final - highest scoring competitors across all heats that meet the required standard are invited to compete at the UK final over a three day national event.In the spirit of skillbuild, the national final is an opportunity for all involved to celebrate excellence in construction training and ability.
This year the final was held at South Lanarkshire College, East Kilbride near Glasgow and consisted of 155 competitors.
The awards ceremony was hosted at Scotland's National Football Stadium, Hampden Park hosted by television presenter Angelica Bell.
Scott Mapp, an employee of Chubb Roofing Limited was our candidate in the Single Ply Roofing category fitting a product called Rhepanol to a pre-built roofing rig.
We were sponsored by SPRA, the Single Ply Roofing Association and SIG Design and Technology.
After competing for three days with an extremely detailed specification to work to, Scott won the Gold award and the title "Best Single Ply Installer". He walked away with a glass trophy, two certificates and £100 prize money from SPRA. We as employers have also presented Scott with a bonus to show our appreciation for his commitment, skill and professionalism.
I also want to say that we are extremely proud of Scott for bringing this trophy home to Chubb Roofing and hopefully it mirrors our commitment to our trade and customers.

Built in 1840, this original gentlemens residence is now divided into apartments and Chubb Roofing have been fortunate to play an important role in the refurbishment program. This has involved a complete new roof covering in natural Brazilian slate, associated roofing lead work and flat roofing work, external render repairs, painting the entire building, and essential steel repairs.
- New Roofing Showroom Opened in Feb 2009
Displaying examples of roof slates, roof tiles, ridge tiles, fascia and guttering, Velux® roof windows, flat roof skylights, roof insulation and many other roofing products including seagull deterrents. The roofing showroom is open Monday to Friday 8:30 - 5:30 at our Pound Lane offices.
- Green Card for Chubb Roofing.... Chubb Roofing received the Green Card status from FDT (UK) Limited licensing them in the application of Rhepanol fk (single ply flat roofing membrane)
- Health & Safety Training is on-going; following the Exeter City Council training day. Training in areas such as reducing risks on site, asbestos awareness and handling, personal safety equipment, working at height regulations, risk assessment, ladder safety, reporting accidents and scaffold safety. This training was extremely benificial and regular on-site visits by The Health and Safety Executive have been welcomed by us to ensure our excellent safety track record continues.
